The EEMS programme was established in 2004 by the Government to engage the automotive industry in using motorsport to accelerate the development and public acceptance of alternative "green" automotive technologies.

Track record

The growing success being achieved by the UK motorsport industry clearly shows that energy efficient and green research and development can bring technological advances, commercial benefits and can be compatible with the spectacle of exciting motorsport. EEMS has worked with championships to encourage putting energy efficiency at the heart of modern motorsport competition.

The future

The adoption of technical regulations that place energy efficiency and the development of alternative fuels and engine technologies at the heart of motorsports competition does not imply that the essence of exciting high-speed competition will be removed from the sport. Instead these advances will provide a high profile and exciting marketing and technology platform that showcases the latest green technology.

The bigger picture

As well as reducing environmental impact and safeguarding resources by adopting energy efficiency, motorsport can provide a superb opportunity to develop sustainable technologies of great interest to other industries such as road transport, marine, aviation and defence.

Rapid prototyping and testing under the intense pressure of competition forces the pace of development and demands high standards of manufacture, while the highly visible nature of the sport also provides a showcase to demonstrate and prove these technologies and bring investment to the industry.

Members of the original EEMS team have been successful in securing funding from the Technology Strategy Board to put 16 cutting edge high specification electric sports cars on the road for 12 months. To find out more about this project visit: www.eemsaccelerate.co.uk
